Your previous study and professional experience may count towards your qualification. If you've completed relevant higher education studies or gained knowledge and skills through work or other learning experiences, you may be eligible to receive academic credit through Credit Transfer or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Each application is individually assessed against the learning outcomes, level and requirements of the course. Credit is not guaranteed and is awarded only where the evidence demonstrates that prior learning is equivalent to the required learning outcomes.

What is a credit transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are processes that recognise learning you have already completed, whether through formal study or relevant professional and life experience.

You may be eligible to receive academic credit for:

  1. Previous study completed at a recognised higher education provider or registered training organisation
  2. Relevant workplace or professional experience
  3. Industry training or professional development
  4. Other formal, non-formal or informal learning that can be demonstrated through appropriate evidence.

Each application is assessed individually against the learning outcomes, content and Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level of the relevant units. Credit may be granted where your previous learning is assessed as equivalent to the learning required for your course.

Applications may be submitted by:

  1. Prospective domestic students
  2. Prospective international students
  3. Currently enrolled students.

International applicants are encouraged to submit their application before accepting their offer or commencing study, as credit outcomes may affect enrolment and student visa arrangements.

Students whose applications are successful will not be disadvantaged in achieving the learning outcomes of their course.

Previous higher education or vocational study
Workplace and professional experience
Industry training and professional development
Non-formal and informal learning
Other learning that can be demonstrated through appropriate evidence.

Supporting evidence may include:

Official academic transcripts
Qualification certificates
Unit outlines and learning outcomes
Assessment information
Curriculum vitae (CV)
Employer references
Position descriptions
Performance reviews
Professional portfolios
Industry certifications
Other documents demonstrating your knowledge and skills.

Documents must be verifiable. Where required, documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Depending on the type of application you are making, evidence of prior learning may include, but is not limited to:

  1. Official academic transcripts
  2. Qualification certificates or testamurs
  3. Unit outlines, course learning outcomes and assessment information
  4. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  5. References and letters from employers demonstrating roles they have held in professional or industry work
  6. Documents outlining their roles and performance reviews
  7. Any short courses undertaken and certificates
  8. Tangible outputs such as publications, portfolios of work aligned to the position description.

All evidence must be relevant, current and verifiable. Documents not issued in English must be accompanied by a certified translation where required.

Applications are assessed individually by authorised staff in accordance with University policy and the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Assessment considers but is not limited to:

Equivalence of learning outcomes
Relevance of previous learning
Depth and breadth of knowledge
Currency of learning
Supporting evidence provided.

Where Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is sought, additional evidence may be required because learning has occurred outside formal education.

Applicants will normally receive written notification of the outcome within 21 business days of a complete application being received. All decisions are recorded including reasons for any non-approval. The decision will be kept on the Students' relevant records.

To ensure academic standards are maintained, Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applications are assessed in accordance with the following requirements:

  1. Prior learning must be sufficiently current and relevant. Credit will generally only be granted where the learning was completed within the preceding ten (10) years, unless the applicant can demonstrate that the knowledge and skills remain current and relevant to the course.
  2. Credit is granted only where the prior learning is assessed as equivalent in content, depth and learning outcomes to the relevant units, and is aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level of the course.
  3. The total amount of Credit that may be granted is limited so that students complete a substantial part of the course at Stockdale. The maximum amount of credit that can be awarded for any course is 50%.
  4. Students must complete a minimum of half (50%) of the course credit points through study at Stockdale, including the Capstone Project, to ensure achievement of the course learning outcomes.
  5. Credit will not be granted twice for the same learning, and Credit awarded for one qualification cannot be transferred or reused towards another qualification at Stockdale.

If in processing the application for credit Stockdale finds that the information presented was false or invalid, it reserves the right to withdraw that credit once awarded. The Program Coordinator or delegated authority will approve the withdrawal of credit and notify the student. If a student wishes to appeal the decision, they must do so in accordance with the Student Complaints and Appeals Policy and Procedure. Where the information provided was false, there may be sanctions against the student.

  1. Download and complete the Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning Application Form.
  2. Gather your supporting evidence.
  3. Submit your completed application before enrolling, or no later than the published census date.
  4. Once your application has been received, it will be reviewed to ensure all required documentation has been provided before being assessed by the appropriate Stockdale staff.

You'll receive written notification of the outcome, including the reasons for the decision and any next steps.

If you're dissatisfied with the outcome of your application, you may request a review or lodge an appeal in accordance with the Student Complaints and Appeals Policy.
